VAL DI FUMO: WALKING ALONG ITS PATHS IS LIKE OPENING A DRAWER OF DREAMS…

One of the most precious pearls of Trento province.

A beautiful excursion in western Trento province, under the Adamello mountian group and in front of Carè Alto peak! Are you ready to get to know landscapes that you have been able to admire only on postcards of Trento province?

Close your eyes and reopen them only when you feel the breath of infinity … in Val di Fumo!

People often talk of filling their eyes with the beauty of Italy. Trento province and its wonderful mountains are part of their daydreams. We want to take you sailing on these breathtaking landscapes with our posts.

Where is it?

The Val di Fumo is located in western Trento province and is the final part of Val di Daone. It’s a sinuous wedge in the heart of the Adamello mountain group. The two and a half hour walk to Val di Fumo Mountain Refuge Cabin is up the slopes of the famous Carè Alto peak (3465 meters above sea level). On beautiful days, proceeding towards the giant that dominates the Valley is definitely an indescribable emotion.

Where to start?

The starting point is the end of the asphalt strip from the Chiese Valley floor to the majestic dam of Malga Bissina lake. Parking near the dam is subject to a fee and obligatory reservations, especially in high season.

The first part is definitely not particularly difficult. About an hour of pleasant lakeside walking leads you to Malga Breguzzo, where the real exploration in Val di Fumo begins. This first part of the excursion is a comfortable dirt road that’s feasible with strollers. However, the road becomes a narrow path from there on.

The second part is a circular tour. We recommend taking the right side of the stream on the outward journey and the other side on the way back. Leaving Malga Breguzzo behind, you are immediately catapulted into a postcard landscape with waterfalls, streams, wooden walkways and fords to cross streams. The path has gradual ups and downs that lead to the Val di Fumo Mountain Refuge Cabin in just under an hour. How beautiful it is to walk along this valley of wilderness views and how exciting it is to see up close the great giant that majestically stands guarding the valley. The Carè Alto is a difficult peak in the Adamello mountains, due to its height and the approach routes requiring some mountaineering skills.

This walk is particularly appreciated by children. Between one part and another, in the ford of a stream, or when crossing a small bridge, cute animals emerge. Horses, cows, donkeys and goats are a joyful background to the nature that invokes contemplation and the spirit of infinity.

Once at the refuge cabin, you can choose between the delight of some local dishes or a corner of the beautiful meadow where you can have your packed lunch and take a pleasant nap before returning to the circular path and following the signs to Malga Breguzzo, where the path rejoins the dirt road of the outward journey.
