PICTURESQUE FISHERING VILLAGE AND SHORTEST RIVER IN THE WORLD

Among the Guinness records of Lake Garda, there is a rather particular one. We always talk about the longest rivers in the world, about the deepest lakes or the highest mountains, but we rarely talk about the inverse. Do you know where the shortest river in the world is?

It’s the Aril River, which measures 175 meters in length and flows entirely through the hamlet of Cassone in the municipality of Malcesine. Did you already know it? Don’t miss our article …

On the north-east side of Lake Garda, the village of Cassone is located just over 4 kilometers from Malcesine, near the border between Veneto and Trentino. It’s a small and charming old fishing village. Its views of the lake and narrow lanes will repay you with emotions and life of distant times. Compared to the very famous Malcesine, which is celebrated for the imposing Scaligero Castle, Cassone does not enjoy the same popularity. However, the charm of this lakeside village will leave you delighted, especially those of you who don’t like crowds and mass tourism resorts.

During Christmas in Cassone, an evocative floating nativity scene is set up on the Aril River. Unmissable!

Aril, the shortest river in the world

The village is crossed by the shortest river in the world, the Aril. It’s only 175 meters long and boasts of being the shortest in Italy and among the shortest in the world! It’s a real river, as it is by definition a “watercourse with a permanent flow”.

The short length doesn’t take any of the poetry from the small stream that counts three bridges and a small waterfall. The source of the river is an underground pool that forms a small lake where trout lay their eggs every year.

After the state road, the stream splits into two parts. One flows next to the poetic port where the curious Museum of the Lake is also located. It rushes into Lake Garda, creating the most photographed picturesque scene of the village.

Summer 1913 – Gustav Klimt in Tremosine

Historical testimonies have been handed down to us that the famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was particularly fascinated by this delightful town. So much so that during a visit he painted the work “Church in Cassone sul Garda”. During his summer stay in Tremosine, he let himself be enchanted by the views of beautiful Lake Garda. He also created the famous “View of Malcesine”.
